MANY OF US ARE SLAVES TO OUR LIVES

- thedream@winniekunene.co.za Winnie Kunene

WHAT is life about? Is it about being a cog in a system that ultimately benefits others?

If that is the case, something is fundamentally wrong with the system and it is not sustainable.

Today you are getting no immediate answers to your life and money, but I am hoping that the issues raised will linger in your mind and, hopefully, when you see the big picture, you can start putting your life in perspective and make it meaningful – whatever that means for you.

Most of us spend our lives working for others. We pay off debt to others and perform duties to serve others.

It has always been said that the borrower is a servant of the lender, and most of us start going into debt very early in our adult years.

So if we spend the best years of our lives building businesses for others, servicing debts that we owe to others and making others wealthier, what does that make us? Slaves or servants, right? No, I suppose we would prefer to be called employees. But is there really much difference?

Small business ownership is low in South Africa, which makes the number of people who are selfemployed drastically low.

Most of us have been trained to study hard so we can get jobs.

If someone asked you what you truly own, what would you say?

Do you own your car? Most people don ’ t.

What about your home? Do you own it? If it is fully paid, what do you think will happen if you don ’ t pay for levies, rates and taxes to the authorities? What about all your other stuff? Do you own it?

A large percentage of us have willingly enslaved ourselves in order to acquire all of that stuff. So what is life about then? Is it about being a cog in a system that ultimately benefits others? Perhaps you don ’ t think that any of this applies to you, but how long are you willing to be just another cog in the system?
