Nerves cost Downs: Pitso

- Mazola Molefe

MAMELODI Sundowns overcame their nerves too late in their 3-1 defeat to TP Mazembe in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, according to coach Pitso Mosimane.

While the scoreline suggests the South African champions were outplayed in the second leg of their CAF Champions League first-round encounter in Lubumbashi – having led 1-0 from the first leg – Mosimane argued that Mazembe were not completely dominant.

“Their first goal [from Rainford Kalaba] came against the run of play. To be honest, we never saw them scoring in that time even though we were not playing well because we were a little bit nervous,” the coach said.

“We showed our inexperience and just didn ’ t play, resorting to kicking the ball out and succumbing to the pressure that was piling up.

“The guys were not comfortable playing our usual game until the second half, after a little pep talk.”

Even with Mazembe looking like favourites to win the Champions League tie after Mbwana Samatta and Roger Assale added their names to the score sheet, Downs were still in with a chance, especially following Percy Tau ’ s late strike to make it 3-1.

Another goal and the game would have been deadlocked at 3-3, allowing Downs to go through on the away goals rule.

“We scored a little bit late. I think had we scored earlier we would have given them trouble. In fact, they started panicking near the end, hence they started the delaying tactics – the usual story, like ball boys not giving the ball back in time and hiding it,” Mosimane lamented.

He again commended the match officials and urged his men to get over their Champions League exit and focus on their clash against Black Aces tomorrow.

“I went to congratulate them [match officials] after the game and told them it is unusual to find that kind of refereeing, especially in an intimidating venue like a fully packed TP Mazembe Stadium. I ’ d say it was a learning curve.

“We need to consolidate our league position to be in this competition again next season. Our next two league games are very crucial. I believe if we win those games then we have a big opportunity to be back in the Champions League.”
