THEY KILLED OUR BOY ’

Witnesses tell of socialite s cold-blooded murder

- Pertunia Mafokwane

AN EYEWITNESS has painted a dramatic picture of how a popular Tshwane socialite and businessman was gunned down in cold blood.

Monare Ignatius Selokwane, popularly known as “Junior 13 ”, died in a hail of bullets at the weekend. Yesterday, community members who gathered outside his popular butchery in D4, Mamelodi, were reluctant to talk about the man they described as generous and kind-hearted.

Residents also painted a picture of a man who lived the high life and had an Audi, Ferrari and Porsche in his fleet. They refused to be named or photographed.

His family also refused to speak to Sowetan.

Selokwane was an alleged multimillionaire crime kingpin who was once high on the police ’ s most wanted suspects list. He was previously reportedly linked to multimillion-rand bank robberies. But he was never convicted. He was gunned down near the popular Maseko shopping centre where his butchery is situated.

An eyewitness said the shooting was like a scene out of an action movie when a gunman walked up to Junior 13 and opened fire on him.

A man who was present during the shooting told Sowetan that there was silence for close to an hour after Selokwane was gunned down. “Junior 13 was sitting in the same bunk stool with us. We were laughing and having a good time. He was walking to the braai stand when the man walked up to him and opened fire. He had a big gun. “We all went to the ground. It was silent for about 45 minutes. I was afraid of raising my head because I did not know if I will be shot. I heard about 36 shots.

When I raised my head, there was smoke in the air. The gunmen were gone.” The man said he was saddened by Selokwane ’ s death. “I don ’ t care what people out there say, to us Junior was a good man. I called him ‘ The Mind ’ because he always had a business idea. People were always happy around him.” One of Selokwane ’ s employees said he was devastated. “They killed our boy. He employed us when we could not find jobs. People would come to him whenever they have problems in their homes and he would give them money. He helped my family a lot, we never slept on an empty stomach because of him,” he said.

Selokwane was not only loved by the youth but by the elderly too. An elderly woman said she would miss parties Selokwane threw during the festive seasons.

Gauteng provincial police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said he could not comment on the multimillion-rand robberies linked to Junior 13.

No arrests have been made.
