THE mother of the four boys whose father brutally killed them by slitting their throats broke down in tears as she told the Polokwane High Court about her loss.

An emotional Lorraine Kekana told the court about the pain she is still feeling after losing her children in such a savage manner at the hands of their father.

Her husband, Lesiba Kekana, was found guilty of four counts of murder and one of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old father pleaded guilty to the brutal murder of Bokang, 13, Keneilwe, 10, six-yearold Hlologelo, and Lekgoledi, four.

“My heart is still sore. I was deeply affected by the loss of my children, especially at the hands of their father,” said Kekana, who also confirmed having visited several psychologists for counselling.

“The fact that the man had made me speak to my children before he killed them left an unforgettable pain in me,” she said.

She was so overcome by emotions that the court had to adjourn to allow her to recover.

Yesterday Lesiba Kekana appeared before Judge Joseph Raulinga in the Polokwane High Court, where he testified in mitigation of sentence.

Prosecutor Nozizwe Molepo told him that he should have taken his own life rather than those of the “innocent kids”.

“You are dangerous and cruel. You want to control everyone around you. You wanted to take your own life. Why suddenly those of the children?” asked Molepo.

Kekana told the court that he thought his children were going to suffer if he killed himself.

The kids were killed in the house they shared with their father in Moletlane section of Zebediela on September 6 last year.

The murders took place after he had returned home with the children from visiting their mother in Mamelodi near Pretoria.

He said he had seen two used condoms and another unused one inside a pit toilet. He said his wife denied any knowledge of the condoms.

He said she later confessed to him that she had had an affair with a man known as Enock, with whom she had used the condoms.

Kekana apologised unreservedly for his actions, admitting he had allowed his emotions to get the better of him. He pleaded with the court to have mercy on him and allow him to get back with his wife and “start all over again”.

“What makes you think the woman will accept you back after such cruelty displayed on her kids?” Molepo asked him.

She said the fact that he had attacked his wife with an axe on June 21 last year was testimony that he was dangerous and cruel.

The trial continues.
