2012 A number of employees from Lonmin mine go on strike demanding a wage increase;

Reports of intimidati­on and assault. Two employees are shot and hospitalis­ed;

Five employees are shot and taken to hospital while others are assaulted. Two mine security officers are hacked to death by protesters;

Three dead bodies of mineworker­s are found. Two police officers are hacked to death;

There is bloodbath at Marikana as police shoot and kill dozens of protesting mineworker­s;

National Police Commission­er General Riah Phiyega confirms that 34 people were killed at Marikana, 78 injured while 259 were arrested;

The Marikana Commission of Inquiry is appointed by President Jacob Zuma;

The Marikana Commission of Inquiry opens in Rustenburg, NW.

2013 Phiyega begins testifying before the commission.

2015 Zuma releases the Marikana report, which fingers Phiyega and other senior police officers of wrongdoing;

Zuma appoints a board of inquiry to look into Phiyega’s fitness to hold office; Zuma suspends Phiyega.

2016 Inquiry into Phiyega’s fitness to hold office starts.
