Nothende wants her money
MUSICIAN Nothende Madumo has accused Soul Candi and DJ Lulo Cafe of owing her money for the song she was featured on.
Madumo collaborated with Lulo Cafe on I Wanna Love You and she claims that she was never paid. She poured her heart out in a statement that she had been waiting for six years to be paid.
Since the song received massive airplay, and was featured on many compilations, Madumo expected to receive what is due to her as a vocalist. “I still don’t understand why the people from Soul Candi have not paid me a single cent for the international sale of I Wanna
Love You. Not a single cent. I was initially told no money was exchanged,” she said.
Madumo said she agreed to feature on the song because she saw it as a “big opportunity”.
The song was recorded in 2011 when, as she said, things were “bad” in her life. With no source of income, she didn’t have a place to stay. “I was crashing on friends’ couches. I had just released my first album.”
She said when the situation became worse, she begged Lulo, real name Sikhululo Maliwa, to feature her on his set because she needed to make money. Madumo said she was prepared to earn peanuts for these performances.
When contacted to elaborate on her statement, Madumo refused to comment. She further refused to state how much she was owed by Soul Candi. “I don’t want to comment on that,” she said.
Sowetan contacted Lulo Cafe but his phone was off. He, however, posted a response to Madumo’s claim where he noted: “I never do this but I’ve been left with no choice ... I respect Nothende and we have been cool ... but this is business and I understand.”
Soul Candi was founded by Harael Salkow and Mbuso Tulwana more than 10 years ago.
However, Tulwana sold his shares some time ago and attempts to get comment from Salkow proved fruitless.
