Nancy tackles Zuma in song

- Lesley Mofokeng

NANCY G, the Afro-pop musician from the Ghetto Ruff stable, has released a song in which she attacks the leadership of President Jacob Zuma.

Titled Corruption, Nancy, 30, said she was concerned that corruption had become embedded into South African society, especially since 1994.

The guitar strummer sings: “...who are they, where are they from... spending money at the people’s expense.”

“I’m a firm believer of human values. Our leadership is a service body and when you look at the current state of our country, it’s evident that there is corruption everywhere.

“I do mention JZ [Zuma] as humour and banter, but he’s the man in power. He has the responsibility of being the humble servant, but I think he is selfish.

“We can all see how bad the situation is and how our people are suffering. He’s made decisions that are not for South Africa, and what we are going through as a nation.

“I don’t think he has understood the serious disparities to be addressed, not through e-tolls and venture capitals or RDP housing, there needs to be social engagements with the people.

“He has been engaging with people who sold him capitalism.”

Nancy argued that if Zuma didn’t make wise decisions he would lead people into more problems and trouble.

“He is more focused on capitalism instead of restoring the fabric of society. Money has become the central core of how we function.”

Nancy added that she felt compelled to speak out.

“If a 13-year-old can stand up to a white Afrikaner and say that she’s proud of who she is and stand up for her rights, why can’t I stand up? I should not feel threatened by my government or be at their mercy,” she said.

Nancy said she loved the ANC, but it broke her heart.

“People can’t just live to pay e-tolls, tax, water and lights. JZ needs to be aware of the legacy he’s leaving.”

An honours muso-sociology graduate from the University of Westminster, UK, Nancy said she chose music as an influential tool for activism.

She hopes her song will wake South Africans to the “reality” and to find solutions.
