- Sowetan Reporter

THE SA Football Association (Safa), Soweto Football Association and Clinix Health Group officially launched this year’s Stix Morewa tournament yesterday.

The tournament – which is in honour of the late former Safa president, Solomon “Stix” Morewa – kicks off on September 11 in Soweto.

“The 2016 tournament will once again be an ideal platform for exposing and developing young talent, especially our upand-coming female players. The fact that we are launching the tournament during women’s month seems especially apt,” said Dr Peter Matseke, who is the chiefs executive of the tournament’s sponsor, Clinix Health Group.

Banyana Banyana midfielder Refiloe Jane has been chosen as this year’s ambassador having started her career playing in the Stix Morewa tournament.

“Our goal this year is once again to inspire more women to play through schools, coaches and our communities. We are looking forward to a professional, fun and competitive tournament this year,” said Phil Mogodi, Soweto Football chairman.

The three-month-long tournament will see 1 200 teams compete in the under-9 category, a further 140 in the under-11s, 180 in the U-13s, 260 in the U-15s, 260 in the U-17 category and 60 in the seniors along with 16 ladies teams. The final is pencilled in for November.

The Stix Morewa tournament is one of the biggest football tournaments in the country and supports Safa’s 2022 vision. –
