Lectures are suspended

-

THE Wits University student representative council yesterday rejected the militarisation of the institution through police and private security guards that “waste” university resources.

The SRC urged students to use their time to study and participate in various demonstrations, and also said it would organise study sessions in order not to fall behind academically.

Meanwhile, Vaal University of Technology (VUT) students yesterday handed over a memorandum to management demanding a 0% fee increment next year.

VUT has suspended its classes, and students are resolute that there won’t be any teaching and learning until management agrees to their demands.

At the University of Fort Hare in Eastern Cape, students were yesterday locked in a mass meeting with the SRC. They were discussing a way forward after the fees hike announcement made by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

All academic activities have been suspended at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Vicechancellor Sizwe Mabizela made the decision yesterday after students moved through the campus disrupting lectures.

Meanwhile‚ there have been no reported protests at Walter Sisulu University since Nzimande’s announcement that sparked ructions at universities across the country. – Bongekile
