A Sotho drama with an emotional spin

- Moipone Malefane

is a colourful Sotho story written by Masechele Khaketla. It tells a painful story of servitude while celebrating life through music.

Set in the 1950s in Lesotho, it’s about Tseleng, an orphan, played by Pulane Rampoana, who is brought up by her uncle after her parents’ death.

Tseleng’s life in that home is not easy as the uncle’s wife Malitaba, played by Tinah Mnumzana, makes her feel like she will never achieve anything in life.

Malitaba is an alcoholic and subjects Tseleng to back-breaking household chores while she and her daughter don’t lift a finger.

Malitaba is abusive, doesn’t think twice about insulting Tseleng, but the strong young woman maintains her composure in the face of intolerable ill-treatment.

Tseleng’s friend Thato, played by Titi Motsieloa, and other neighbours, urge her to escape the hard life. She ignores their advice while, deep down, she yearns for a better life.

The scenes of abuse from the foul-mouthed Malitaba are as shocking as much as they are funny. The pinnacle of emotions comes when Tseleng, overcome Seli La Ka. dololo, Mosali Eo U ‘Neileng Eena Mosali Eo u ‘Neileng Eena malefanem@sowetan.co.za
