Motsepe orders Downs to win it

- Tshepang Mailwane

MAMELODI Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe has reminded his players that no one remembers those who are second best.

Motsepe was in the dressing room at Lucas Moripe Stadium to motivate the players after Sundowns beat Zesco United 3-2 on aggregate to progress to the final of the Caf Champions League for the first time since 2001.

The mining magnate, who has had a dream of conquering Africa for many years, was reluctant to speak to the media after the game as he felt his players deserved all the praise, but he eventually gave in and revealed what he said behind closed doors.

“The most important thing that was said is we still have a long way to go. I think it’s correct to say Pitso [Mosimane] did wonderful work and the players did wonderful work. They made us all very proud,” said Motsepe.

“But nobody remembers number two. Nobody remembers that you were in the finals, so the most important thing was to motivate them. I mean we’ve won the league many times, but to represent your country (the Champions League) is the greatest honour for all of us.” Before having a chat with the players, Motsepe went on to the pitch to applaud the supporters for coming out in their numbers. It was one of the best crowds Sundowns have had in the competition and the numbers are likely to grow when they face Zamalek in the final. “I also had to thank the supporters because they are the ones who really inspire the players. The supporters are happy.”
