More schools planned for disabled pupils

GAUTENG government has promised to build eight new schools for pupils with disabilities.

MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi announced this to residents of Braamfischerville, Soweto, during the official opening of the state-of-the-art R83 million Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela Primary School in the area.

“We are going to build eight schools in the province for our disabled children. We have officially opened 18 schools for learners with autism in Gauteng,” he said.

Lesufi promised residents that next month he would officially open another primary school in the area named Nkone Maropeng Primary School.

“We have listened to our communities when they asked for schools. Gone are the days when learners of Braamfischerville would have to wake up early, wait for buses to be taken to schools in Dobsonville. Now our children will have to walk to a school closer to them.

“In some communities when there are no lights, water or there are burst sewer pipes, learners are not able to go to school. Those things will never happen in Gauteng. If there is no water at home, pack your children’s uniform in their bags and they will bathe here at this school,” he said.

“We are going to open these kind of schools every month until the end of 2017. This school accommodates 1 300 learners and the next one will also accommodate 1 300 learners. This will ease the backlog of learners waiting for space,” he said.
