THE prayer session for ailing gospel star Lundi Tyamara last night in Johannesburg started in a sombre mood, but swiftly turned into what could have been mistaken for a music concert.

Friends, family and fans of Lundi,

praised and worshipped at Central Methodist Church in the CBD, asking God to spare the singer’s life.

Pastors who spoke said a miracle would happen in Lundi’s life because South Africans were united in prayer and God would hear their prayers.

Lundi is fighting for his life at the Edenvale Hospital after he was diagnosed with stomach TB and a liver problem. He has been in and out of hospital since last month and was moved into the intensive care unit on Monday when his condition worsened. Beleaguered former SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng used the prayer session to lambast the country’s media for being heartless and spreading false rumours about people. Motsoeneng, who said he was once a journalist, said he did not understand where the culture of speaking bad about sick people and the dead comes from. “I want to warn the media and say ‘don’t give wrong information about people’ .I have been a journalist myself and I have said that we need to regulate [the] media in this country … If you go anywhere in the world, media reports responsibly but not in South Africa. This is the time to say to the media, stop it, enough is enough.”

Motsoeneng said the media needed to respect Lundi’s family and not spread rumours about him, and that it was God who was going to decide whether he is going to die or not.

Also present at the prayer service was Pastor Paseka “Mboro” Motsoeneng who said there was a “spirit” that was attacking black people who are rising. “Our artists are dying, some die poor and we jointly need to pray for this,” he said.

Gospel artists such as Kholeka Dubula, Deborah Fraser and Buhle Nhlangulela were also present and performed.

Thanking those present, Lundi’s manager Anele Hlazo said they had organised the event on Tuesday and were happy so many people had attended. “We appreciate this and it shows that Lundi is loved and we hope after this we will see a big change in his health.”
