Sundowns eye Diski title

- Sihle Ndebele

AFTER a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ajax Cape Town on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns’ MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) team are hoping to emulate the successes of their senior side.

The young Brazilians are currently at the summit of the PSL reserve league with 28 points, and they look set to mirror the achievements of their first team, who won the Absa Premiership and the CAF Champions League titles last season.

Downs’ MDC skipper, Sibusiso Kumalo, believes they can win the title if they continue to draw inspiration from the main team.

“The reserve team look up to the first team. We are enjoying our football and would like to achieve our goals – one of which is winning the MDC title.

“Anything is possible but I think we have the credentials to win the title. The [MDC] boys want to make Sundowns supporters happy too,’’ Kumalo told Sowetan yesterday.

The Sundowns juniors came agonisingly close to winning the MDC title on two occasions – but lost to University of Pretoria in the inaugural event in 2015/16, and the young Brazilians were denied on the final day last season when Golden Arrows lifted the title with a dramatic comeback.

Sundowns will be hoping to extend their lead at the top of the MDC table when they host Free State Stars at Tuks Stadium on Sunday. Weekend results Chippa 3, FS Stars 1; Baroka 2, Maritzburg United 3; Celtic 3, Polokwane City 2; Pirates 2, Highlands Park 1; Ajax 2, Sundowns 3; SuperSport 0, Platinum Stars 0; Wits 1, Arrows 1; Chiefs 2 CT City 0.
