FRANCE won its first Miss Universe crown in 64 years yesterday in Philippines.

Iris Mittenaere, a dental surgery student from Lille in the north of France, beat 85 of the world’s most beautiful women.

The 24-year-old edged out Miss Haiti, her first princess, and Miss Colombia, the second princess.

Miss SA, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, failed to make an impression as she was overlooked for one of the top 13 spots.

Kunene also returned emptyhanded from Miss World last month in the US.

“My journey was to inspire young women in South Africa to work towards their goals while also giving of my best,” Kunene said.

“I feel I achieved both. I am confident that I have left footprints that will not be followed, but used as a guideline for the advancement of women. And do you know what? I think the best girl won.

“I met Miss France, Iris Mittenaere, and all I can say is that she thoroughly deserves the crown. I wish her everything of the best during her reign.”

Kunene said she enjoyed the pageant to the fullest.

“Miss Universe was an amazing and life-changing experience. I was lucky to meet some of the world’s most beautiful and accomplished women, and visit a country where pageants are celebrated.

“It is a memory that will live with me forever and is something I will never forget.”

Kunene said she had met valuable contacts and has made great friendships.

Meanwhile, a clearly emotional Mittenaere gushed in a postpageant news conference: “I was very surprised. I am always touching the crown and saying ‘Oh my God. I have the crown on my head. I don’t believe it.’ She said she would advocate for good hygiene and educating children. –
