Let it rain more goals

-

THE restart of the Premier Soccer League programme midweek tickled our fancy.

The flurry of goals – 25 in eight fixtures to be exact – gave us something to look forward to as the Premiership enters the decisive stage of the campaign.

Goals are what makes the game and we hope this becomes a regular occurrence as it could go a long way into drawing more spectators back to the stadiums to make for a perfect TV picture as opposed to the virtually barren seats that continues to flash across our screens.

We were captivated at the manner in which the so-called unfashionable sides continued from where they left off from the first round.

We looked at the PSL log and the likes of SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City continue to suggest that this is going to be a rather close race as the trio reaffirmed their status as serious title contenders with convincing wins.

That SuperSport and Wits put five past their opponents, sent a very strong message to fellow title hopefuls that they’ll put up a fight.

What also made this past week exciting was the parade of new players by some clubs and the return of familiar old faces such as Jacob Sakala, though he started on a losing note with his Baroka side.

We believe the likes of Sakala – who has established himself as the miracle worker of some sort in our domestic league – add to the colour that we need to make our league even more exciting.

As we head into a weekend that will be highlighted by the league clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates tomorrow, we say to the teams: make it another goal extravanganza and keep them coming.

We would also like to this opportunity to wish SuperSport United and Platinum Stars well as they embark on their respective CAF Confederation Cup assignments this weekend.

We hope the two will emulate Sundowns by flying the flag high on the continental stage.
