Key players set to miss MDC games

- Sihle Ndebele

THIS weekend’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) penultimate round at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi will see a number of teams – including title contenders – missing key players.

The likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits have their players drafted into the SA under-20 squad that will face Zambia in Lusaka on Sunday.

Sundowns, however, suffered a further blow on Thursday when the PSL disciplinary committee extended the suspension of Thabang Sibanyoni, which saw the club also docked a point.

Sundowns will meet Chiefs on Sunday without their star defender Notha Ngcobo and Sibanyoni, while the Amakhosi reserves will be without their captain Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Wiseman Meyiwa and Siyabonga Ngezana.

A victory for Chiefs will give them a chance to clinch the championship at the last hurdle, while a loss for Sundowns will dent their title hopes.

Wits are third on the MDC log with 26 points, four points below log-leaders Bloemfontein Celtic. The Clever Boys reserves will meet Free State Stars at Goble Park Stadium on Sunday without their influential midfielder Sibongakonke Mbatha, who is also part of Thabo Senong’s 21-man squad preparing for the upcoming u-20 Afcon.

Celtic take on Ajax Cape Town who will be without regular defenders Aghmat Ceres, Shane Saralina, and goalkeeper Darren Johnson.
