NFD Golden Boot war resumes

- Sihle Ndebele FIXTURES: TODAY: TOMORROW: SUNDAY:

THE contest for National First Division’s Golden Boot is expected to hot up when the second tier league resumes its programme this weekend.

Royal Eagle’s Sedwyn George is leading the race with 13 goals, one strike ahead of Thanda Royal Zulu’s Mhlengi Cele. Both strikers will look set to add to their tally on Sunday.

“I want to help the team gain automatic promotion to the elite league. I will also continue to score goals because I would wish to win that award [Golden Boot]. It would be the highlight of my career if I do win it,’’ Cele told Sowetan.

The 30-year-old striker continued: “I am the second top goal-scorer and George is also doing well for himself, but I will try to work even harder to topple him.

“My teammates are supportive and in the first half of the season they were so happy to assist me in scoring, and I hope that will help me and the team in achieving our goals.’’

George, 26, said scoring goals to help the team is the only thing he is thinking about.

“Obviously, I would want to win the top goalscorer award but for me it is the team first before that. The team needs the goals to get promoted, so I will have to work even harder to get those goals. The coach [Kosta Papic] motivates me and that helps,’’ said George.
