New Bafana coach told: Go look overseas

- Tshepang Mailwane

THE South African Football association will not let money be an obstacle when they search for a new coach to take over the lucrative Bafana Bafana post.

Safa will headhunt a coach by the end of the month, despite receiving CVs from the likes of Hassan Shehata, Samson Siasia and Robert Mancini, the former Manchester City manager.

Sowetan has been informed that twotime Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) winning coach Herve Renard and former Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz are top of the list for the job and they both would not come cheap.

Safa will name a selection committee tomorrow, including former Bafana captain Lucas Radebe, to find a man who can take on the demanding job.

“Can we afford not to afford it? You have to be serious. The world expects South Africa to be among the best and if you look at our youngsters, we can get there,” said Safa president Danny Jordaan.

Safa expects Shakes Mashaba’s successor to use more European-based players in his squad and check on the progress they are making. Mashaba had a love-hate relationship with European-based players and did not make an effort to visit them. Andile Jali and Tokelo Rantie were regulars in his squad, but the likes of Kamohelo Mokotjo, May Mahlangu and Ayanda Patosi were sometimes left out for no valid reason.

Mashaba did not have a good relationship with Mokotjo calling him “sluggish” in 2015.

“We have more than 50 players in Europe. We want a coach to visit each and every one of those players because when you play in Europe, like Bongani Zungu, it does not mean he is no longer available. European players must be equal to the locally based players,” said Jordaan.
