Jordaan set to stand for top Fifa seat

- Sowetan Reporter

SAFA president Danny Jordaan will once again contest for a place in the Fifa executive when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) congress takes place in Ethiopia next month.

Jordaan, who lost out on the post when he first contested it five years ago, will vie for an executive seat in the open category, which has three vacancies of which one has to be a female candidate.

Other contenders in this category are Kabele Camara of Guinea and Chabur Goc of South Sudan. Lydia Nsekera of Burundi is vying for the female position, Safa said on their website. Africa has seven representatives on the Fifa Council with the president of CAF being an automatic vice-president of football’s governing body.

There is a seat that is solely reserved for a female candidate and a representative each from the following language groups: English, French and combined Arab/Portuguese/Spanish.

The three remaining seats will come from the open category, one for the female spot and two for open contest. The duration of the incoming candidates run from 2017-2021. The election takes place in the Ethiopian capital on March 15.

Last weekend, Cosafa took a decision to support their candidates but emphasised that they will only back sitting FA presidents. The regional body announced that they will be supporting Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad to challenge long-serving CAF president Issa Hayatou. Cosafa has 14 votes.

Meanwhile, the CAF executive committee, which should include Hayatou, will descend on SA for the Super Cup final between Champions League title holders Mamelodi Sundowns and Confederation Cup winners TP Mazembe. The match takes place at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (7pm).
