Missed call earns rapist life sentence

A MISSED call to his victim’s cellphone led to a rapist being sentenced to life imprisonment.

Yesterday‚ KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said S’manga Sydney Mchunu‚ 25‚ received a life sentence in the Ladysmith Regional Court for the rape of an 18-year old woman in Ezakheni in early August 2015.

Gwala said the victim was on her way home when she was approached by Mchunu.

“He grabbed and dragged her to a river bank at gun point and raped her. He demanded her cellphone number and she cleverly gave it to him knowing that she did not have her phone with her. He dialled the number immediately and then cut the call,” narrated Gwala.

“Her brother used his cellphone to call the suspect and he realised he had the number saved on his phone. He arranged a meeting and Mchunu was arrested.
