DETONATION TO DEFY PENALTY

Lerena rides for the first time

- RACING EDITOR

TRAINER Geoff Woodruff has his yard in fine form and he can win a few more races at Turffontein today with probably the best of them being Detonation in Race 5, a MR 78 Handicap over 2400m.

After all the rain we have had in the last few days it is sure to be a very wet track and as of 4pm yesterday the penetrometer reading was 27.

Lightly raced Dynasty gelding Detonation has shown a liking for the Turffontein Inside track and has won there three times. He was full of running when winning earlier this month and although he received a hefty seven points (3.5kg) for that win, it may not be able stop him from following up.

Jockey Gavin Lerena, who has found top form, will ride him for the first time.

Royal Honour won well last week and is the main threat.

The very expensive Best Kept Secret was heavily supported to make a winning debut against winners earlier this month but was not disgraced when third behind a decent filly in Daring Diva and she is likelier to be a lot smarter this time and could take out Race 1, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m.

Her only danger appears to be the Corne Spies trained Star Profile who also showed promise on debut when runner-up behind Desert Rhythm.

Captain Marooned looked decent early in his career and it is a bit surprising he is still in the maiden ranks. He should make amends by winning Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1200m. Lerena and Woodruff again team up but this Captain Al gelding will need to overcome a wide draw.

Red Rebel is holding his form very well and is the pick of some modest animals in Race 5, a Maiden Plate over 2600m. This longer distance should suit the Rebel King fouryear-old.

His only real threat, Miesque’s Rumba, was 4.50 lengths adrift of Red Rebel when they met at this track in January.
