TALENTED NDLOVU DANCES TO STARDOM
PROFESSIONAL dancer and choreographer Khaya Ndlovu cannot wait to dazzle dance enthusiasts with her moves on March 2.
Ndlovu, 25, will be presenting her masterpiece which is part of the Dance Umbrella that began yesterday. She co-wrote the piece with Tshepo Zasekhaya, and it will be presented at the Wits Theatre in Braamfontein.
premiered in 2015 at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, and since then has been staged at different venues.
She defines her work as an exploration of the physical features of human food, and how it contains information on human characteristics and human capabilities. Ndlovu,
says the evolution of the human is a global map on human influence on the surface, which suggests that one’s prints are stewards of the beginning of life and the end of legacy.
In her show, Ndlovu explores the identity of women, questioning their strength and power. She was inspired to create the piece after she toured the world with different shows. “I observed how they work and noticed that they embrace their own cultures, while in South Africa we seem to chase the cultures that are not ours.
“I am interrogating who we are [women]. I look at different aspects of life of women who come from various backgrounds.” She uses the women who marched to Pretoria in 1956 against the pass laws as an inspiration and to reflect on the strength that women have. “Sometimes their stories are not told though they played a big role in the struggle. I also look at women who come from rural areas who find themselves in the city of Johannesburg.” Apart from Ndlovu has created works such as and among others. As a dancer, she has worked with talented choreographers such as Thabo Rapoo, Sifiso Kweyama, Christopher Montague, Timothy le Roux and Kelsey Middleton. Born in East Bank, Alexandra, she started dancing at the age of three. She works with Kmad Company and Dada Masilo. She and Masilo are working on productions such as and which are set to tour internationally. She also co-choreographed a piece called with Kelsey Middleton and Thami Tshabalala
Ndlovu is a product of the National School of the Arts, trained in ballet, contemporary, Spanish, jazz and African dance. She is a dance graduate from Tshwane University of Technology and choreographed for the film
