JANSE VAN VUUREN’S FILLY CAN RUN

FILLY IS BEST HANDICAPPED RUNNER

- RACING EDITOR

PHILANTHROPIST filly She’s A Giver showed some very nice form in Gauteng before a dreadful trip to the Western Cape and trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren looks to have found an ideal race to restart her racing career.

She contests Race 9 at the Vaal today, a Graduation Plate over 1200m.

Being a plated race She’s A Giver comes into this race very well weighted and would be giving 3.5kg and more to her rivals if this was a handicap.

It is a 10-race card and the first is off at 12.10pm and although the Corne Spies-trained Laurent Du Var is clearly the one to beat after a promising debut, keep an eye open in case of betting support for newcomers Alfolk and Polar Ice .

The Mike de Kocktrained Alfolk was due to have run last week and the rumours were out that he is a decent horse.

Trainer Geoff Woodruff has a very good record when sending runners to the Vaal and his charge, Var colt Polar Ice, must be considered.

Jockey Gavin Lerena had another good month in February and can start the new month with an early winner as Key Hostess looks the right one in Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1000m. Lerena takes over the reins of Key Hostess from Chase Maujean and the drop to this distance looks the right way to go for the Fort Wood filly.

Lucky Houdalakis-trained My Treasure was heavily supported when winning his last start and can follow up by taking out Race 6, a MR 66 Handicap over 1400m. That win was over this course and distance and My Treasure only picked up a three-point penalty for that win.

It is worth noting that jockey Piere Strydom has stuck with the ride.

Paul Matchett has his yard in good shape and News Flash in Race 8, a MR 66 Handicap over 1000m, looks likely to contest the finish once again. Muzi Yeni was aboard when the six-yearold gelding won over the course and distance in January.
