HERVE QUITS, BUT IS HE HEADED FOR BAFANA?
THE resignation of Herve Renard as Morocco coach will add more fuel to speculation that the Frenchman is headed to SA to take over as Bafana Bafana coach.
In a shock move, Renard reportedly tendered his resignation with the Morocco FA yesterday, making available immediately to take over any post.
Crucially, the fact that he resigned means the Morocco FA would not be entitled to compensation, which sources had initially put at $2-million (R26-million).
That would have scared off Safa, who also have Carlos Quieroz in the running to replace Shakes Mashaba, sacked for misconduct last month.
Renard has also been linked with Ghana to replace Avram Grant, but Senegal are also apparently after his services. It’s unclear if he would prefer to return to Southern Africa, where he succeeded with Zambia in 2012 by winning the Africa Cup of Nations.
He repeated the feat with Ivory Coast in 2015.
According to our informant, Safa’s shortlist included Queiroz, Renard, Cameroon’s coach Hugo Broos, former Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol and Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt. Roy Hodgson, who has been linked with the job, was not on the short-list for the lucrative Bafana job, contrary to earlier reports. Stuart Baxter was also not on the final list of coaches the technical committee submitted to the Safa NEC, who should make the final decision by tomorrow. Queiroz, the man Safa president Danny Jordaan favours for the job, looks set to be named as coach, and the mother body may be prepared to part ways with a huge amount of money every month to pay his salary. The Portuguese coach is said to have previously earned in the region of R20-million a year as coach of Iran.
