Sowetan

An inspirational paper with the DNA of a nation

- David Tlale THE

MY INTERACTION with Sowetan has been phenomenal and dates back many years. Growing up in the township, Sowetan was

newspaper to read everyday, even long before I got into the industry and became a professional designer.

It was the go-to source of information and entertainment. It has supported many initiatives in entertainment and the arts.

Having to witness Sowetan’s journey and growth as a brand has been great.

It’s one of those trusted and tested brands as a daily newspaper with a nationwide appeal and beyond.

I like Sowetan for the beautiful stories they tell, as well as the bad, the gossip and the exposés. It does cater for a wide variety of readers and interests.

Sowetan has also successfully expanded into the digital space with SowetanLive to attract the younger audience, the brand has grown and moved with the times.

As much as it’s great to be part of the revolution and the evolution, it’s still important to keep the DNA intact.

You look at newspapers like New York Times which have kept their traditions for decades, I wish for Sowetan not to deviate from what we know, the traditional yellow, black and red, because when you see those colours, you know what they represent. You don’t have to try hard.

I’d like to see more lifestyle and entertainment feeds beyond your usual politics and what’s happening on the ground. Please pay more focus on lifestyle. Overall, Sowetan has provided a great reflection of the South African society, good and bad. We should never be scared of our scars and downfall, its part of the journey that we have travelled. Boity Thulo writes: Sowetan is a fantastic newspaper with a rich history and legacy that goes back many years. My interaction with the newspaper has been largely positive and pleasant. They celebrate black success and hold the powerful to account through the different sections and pages of the paper. The fact that it has been around this long is fantastic and is testament that people love it and buy into the brand. It speaks our language and tells our stories. It’s a good newspaper that has championed black issues and has stood the test of time. As it goes through a revamp, it would make a huge difference if it had more positivity and more celebration, there’s always something to celebrate. Continue to inspire the nation and tell good stories in an honest and fair manner.
