Tholwana aims to rock music industry
YEARS after winning SA’s Got Talent, singer Tholwana Mohale will shine as Scaramouche in the National School of the Arts’s edition of famous British band Queen and Ben Elton’s We Will Rock You musical at the Festival of Fame.
Mohale says this is one of her career highlights since winning the reality show in 2014.
“I play Scaramouche, a protagonist in the musical. It will have real live instruments and theatre performers.
“It’s such a big deal for me and I look forward to the experience.
was big but this too is big,” she says.
Mohale, who won the hearts of TV viewers as a 17-year-old adorable cutie in the talent search show, says she is a devoted fan of the band Queen.
“I feel so honoured because the musical was written by Queen and I love the band. I write and compose my own songs so I am just blown away by the arrangement and composition of their music, it’s amazing,” she says.
which will be staged at Joburg Theatre, will form part of the Festival of Fame among other productions that will be adapted to suit a younger audience.
They will be staged in South Africa for the first time and also for the first time outside the United Kingdom and the US.
Featuring all of Queen’s iconic hit songs, the musical tells a dystopian tale of a group of Bohemians who come to the rescue of a society where music is forbidden and everybody thinks and dresses the same. Mohale says the musical will combine two of her passions – music and the performing arts.
“Ever since I was little I have always loved music but when I came to the National School of the Arts I chose drama because I also developed a love for it and this musical is a combination of both.”
The Grade 12 pupil says she will take a gap year after completing her studies to focus on her music career and build her brand.
“There’s so much pressure to get better in the industry because one performance can kill you. So I want to work on my performance. I want the industry to know that this girl is here to leave a mark,” she says.
The Festival of Fame is on until Sunday at the Joburg Theatre and the National School of the Arts.
