Name Bafana coach now

-

NEARLY three months after Shakes Mashaba was removed as national coach, the SA Football Association is still struggling to fill the Bafana Bafana head coach position.

Safa has displayed a lack of professionalism in handling the matter, so much so that when they play their next match in two weeks’ time, Bafana will still be without a head coach on the bench.

This is deplorable given that it was Safa who told the nation the position would be filled as a matter of urgency, especially as this is one of the busiest years for our national side in recent history.

First, Safa postponed a key meeting last month citing the absence of its president Danny Jordaan, who at the time was at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

The association then told us a new coach would be found by Febuary 28. That date came and went, with a new deadline set for last Friday.

Well, we are still without a coach, and the latest rumour is that Safa wants to announce the new man early next week.

The goalposts keep on shifting almost on a daily basis about a very key matter that should really have been handled better.

That Safa only found out last week that it would have to pay millions to get its preferred candidate, Carlos Queiroz, out of his contract with Iran indicates a level of incompetence we have become used to from Safa House. Why wait for so long to check the requisites when the post has been vacant since December 22?

We urge Safa to install a new head coach immediately.

On a positive note, we are encouraged by the selection made yesterday by acting coach Owen Da Gama, who refreshed the squad for the friendlies against Guniea-Bissau and Angola later this month.

Da Gama included for the first time promising youngsters like Percy Tau, Luther Singh and Lorenzo Gordinho.

We hope by the time these matches are played, on March 25 and 28, the new coach will be on the sidelines watching.
