Employees to access bursaries

Wits employees who do not have matric and still want to pursue their studies will now have a chance to do so.

The university is offering its staff members an opportunity to register for a national certificate in business administration at NQF level 2 and 3.

“The aim of this roll-out is to assist individuals who did not complete their matric certificate, or other secondary schooling levels, to move further up the national qualifications framework,” said the head of the human resources development unit, Chantelle Murray.

“This progression is extremely important, because, once certified at NQF level 4, staff members will then be able to apply for higher certificates, diplomas and continue to advance, while also being able to access the Wits bursaries scheme.

“The project, therefore, has transformation and development as underpinning driver values and goals.”

Murray said the unit had put out a call last year in November inviting staff members to apply for the learnership.

So far they have recruited 69 staff members to the programme that will be funded by the Education and Training Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP Seta).

The Seta has contracted Siyanqoba Training to conduct classes at Wits for a period of eight to 10 months over the next two to three years.

Secretary-general of National Health Education & Allied Workers Union at Wits, Tiny Minyuku, said the union was happy about the initiative.

“We are happy that even cleaners will acquire qualifications. We don’t want people to stay in the same position for years,” Minyuku said.
