Morena plots ex-team Celtic’s demise tonight

Defender says it’s time Downs bounce back

For two seasons in a row, Thapelo Morena played a key role in Bloemfontein Celtic’s big victories over Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Now he is on the opposite side and is eager to help Sundowns settle the score after their 5-0 and 3-1 defeats to Phunya Sele Sele in Atteridgeville in 2014/2015 and 2015/2016, respectively. Morena scored in the 5-0 victory.

The two sides meet at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville tonight (7.30pm), with fifth-placed Sundowns struggling recently to get positive results, while Celtic gave themselves a boost with a 1-0 away victory over Polokwane City on Sunday.

So, what exactly helped Celtic achieve those emphatic results against Sundowns?

“It was the game plan that we had. It was good. We also converted the chances that we got,” said Morena, who made the move to Sundowns this season.

“So we just have to work hard on our game plan as well and bury the chances we create.”

Sundowns had a video session yesterday, preparing for a Celtic side that can be dangerous on the left wing with Lyle Lakay constantly getting forward. While watching the videos, Sundowns would have noticed that Celtic have kept a clean sheet in their last three matches in all competitions, showing signs of improvement

“It’s going to be a tough match. They have a good team and they have made changes since I left,” said Morena.

“There are some players who I played with in the development of Celtic, who are now playing in the first team. Tshegofatso Mabaso is playing now.”

Morena says there’s no reason for Sundowns to panic despite their run of four league matches without a victory.

“We just need to work hard and everything will get back to normal. There’s no reason to panic,” he said.
