Many ways to diss president

Various placards hit at ANC leader

- By Moipone Malefane

Home-made placards at yesterday’s march organised by opposition parties displayed how various protesters feel about President Jacob Zuma.

One placard read “Put South Africa first and remove Zuma” and another read “The people versus Jacob Zuma”.

Steve Collins, from Johannesburg, said he was an ANC member at some point after having been in the UDF during apartheid regime.

He said he was now disappointed the ANC did not care for the poor, and only the elite were getting richer.

“I have been let down by the ANC and Zuma. We were promised a better life for all, but now corruption is rampant and they are stealing from the poor.

“ANC need to rethink, otherwise they are moving into the direction of being opposition party,” Collins said.

An 11-year-old boy carried a placard that read: “The people are not junk or rubbish, Jacob Zuma must go”.

A school leaver, Lucas Sheku, said he hoped his party, the EFF, would lead them into a better life.

He said Zuma must step down and give power to his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa.

Gift Mbhele, also an EFF supporter, said Zuma had no integrity and must step down.

He said the EFF was the only party that could implement late black consciousness movement leader Steve Biko’s dreams.

The leaders of the opposition parties – who included EFF, UDM, Cope, DA and IFP – led the protesters in a song that “unity is power”.

However, the EFF, the third largest party in the country, outnumbered all the parties present.
