Expect a new sound, new chapter, says Da L.E.S
Partnership with others makes them their own bosses
Hip-hop artist Leslie Jonathan Mampe, better known as Da L.E.S, has a new strategy to spice up his music career.
Da L.E.S, owner of record label Fresh 2 Def for 10 years, has joined with Gemini Major who left Cassper Nyovest’s record label Family Tree a month ago to start his own, called Rudebouy Major.
The new union includes hiphop artist Yanga, DJ Double D and G Baby Da Silva.
They have dropped an album – F2D: Hall of Fame – which showcases each artist’s diversity and sound.
“It has taken me this long to find the right formula to work with artists,” says Da L.E.S.
“As an artist, I try to learn from other people. This formula, which is a partnership, is the best way to move forward.
“Gemini Major has his record label and Yanga also has his. This allows artists to be bosses themselves. It allows them to spearhead their own companies.”
The 31-year-old says the partnership provides a platform for the artists to grow their brands in a way they could not accomplish individually.
Da L.E.S emphasises it is important he supports and partakes on the journey of all the artists he has formed partnerships with.
He says that he and Gemini Major met while he was still under Cassper Nyovest’s Family Tree and clicked instantly.
The two collaborated on the song Lifestyle, which had everyone singing and dancing along last year.
He says he is currently working on an album whose title has not yet been confirmed.
This will mark his 10th year in the industry. The album will be accompanied by a documentary.
Da L.E.S says he draws his strength from his three-yearold daughter who has contributed to his personal growth.
“Expect a new sound, a new chapter of what I have learned in the industry. I am more mature than when I came in,” he says.
“The new music will put you in a good mood. I am at that stage in my career where I’m happy, so I might as well make happy music.”
