Chiefs, United want cup
Two sides revive rivalry with ‘Ke Yona’ offering incentive for fireworks
The last time Kaizer Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup, they completed the league and cup double in the 2012/2013 season.
Currently in good form in the league, Amakhosi have reason to believe they can complete the double this season, although they are not getting ahead of themselves.
Chiefs fans will remember the 2013 final when Bernard Parker scored in extra time to hand Amakhosi the title at the expense of SuperSport United, the club they’ll host in the quarterfinals at FNB Stadium tomorrow (6pm). That victory came just a few weeks after they wrapped up the Premiership title.
“We had a discussion about the second round after we did not win any trophies in the first round. We set goals for ourselves and it’s a must for us to take both. We have to take it a game at a time,” said Parker.
“We’ve got two more games in the Nedbank Cup and then we are in the final and we have a few more games in the league.”
SuperSport, however, are desperate to turn things around after their back-to-back defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns. Captain Dean Furman stressed the importance of putting the defeats behind them and focus on defending their trophy. “Lifting the trophy last year was a special moment for us.
“It really ended the season on a high note.
“We worked extremely hard to turn our season around, so winning the Nedbank Cup was a memorable moment for all of us,” said Furman
“We know we have a difficult game against Chiefs, but we know that we can win.”
