Boity Thulo takes the wheel with confidence in Change Down, the new Mzansi Magic car show she hosts with comedian Skhumba Hlophe.

“I’m so happy to be doing this show. It’s the ultimate Mzansi experience in driving.

“I bring my bubbly personality and Skhumba brings his comedic appeal. The result is a brilliant show,” she shares.

Thulo says the brief was not to be an expert, but a normal consumer.

“There’s a car guru who comes to give expert advice on the specifics of the car, we’re there as lay people.”

She adds that the show has a distinctive Mzansi flavour as they visit quintessential South African hang out spots like car washes and talk to motorists about what they drive and their experiences.

Thulo identifies herself as a car girl. “I love cars. I am a fanatic. I am also particular on cars I choose. So it’s not entirely a new space for me. This is just right up my alley.”

She says she enjoyed watching the iconic BBC motoring show Top Gear.

“... but I never thought I would present a car show. It’s amazing I find myself here.”

Asked what her dream car is, Thulo says “nothing revs me up like the Mercedes Benz C63 S Coupe, and my favourite colour on cars as well as interiors is red for its power and statement. But I also like white for its purity and angelic element.”

Thulo says she named her first car, Angelique, French for angel because it was a French manufactured Citroen.

She carried on the tradition when she named her grey Merc Angelina, and now her GLA 45 Merc is called Angel.

She hopes to make enough noise with Change Down to attract attention and achieve the cult following of the likes of Top Gear.

Thulo said hosting the show was just an addition to her work on the music show Club 808 on etv.
