Chiefs to rely on rookie goalie again

Intriguing battle as Chiefs travel to SuperSport

- By Tiyani wa ka Mabasa

You can expect comparisons to be made between goalkeepers Bruce Bvuma and Reyaad Pieterse when they feature for Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United respectively tomorrow at Mbombela Stadium (6pm).

Bvuma, who made his debut in the 3-2 loss to Cape Town City this week, is likely to retain his place in the starting line up as first choice keeper Itumeleng Khune has been struggling with a hip injury.

Chiefs’ other trusted keeper Brilliant Khuzwayo is still out injured after undergoing surgery last month.

Bvuma, who was born in Giyani, was promoted to Chiefs’ first team following Khuzwayo’s injury and was then thrown in the deep end against City.

During Pieterse’s time with Chiefs between 2013 and last year, their goalkeeping department looked strong.

Khune was first choice, leaving Pieterse and Khuzwayo to battle it out for a place on the bench. Pieterse is now on the opposite side, having left at the end of last season.

And with Bvuma having now come through, people will be interested to see if he’s a good replacement for Pieterse.

Bvuma, who turns 22 on May 15, will be in the spotlight.

But one man who believes in Bvuma is his agent, Cleopas Monyepao, popularly known as DJ Cleo.

‘ ‘ People should not read too much into fact he conceded three goals

Monyepao represents Bvuma through his company DCF Sports Talent management.

He insisted that people should not read too much into the fact that he conceded three against City.

In case Khune fails a late fitness test, Luthando Sixhaso (23), who has also come through Chiefs’ Diski Challenge team, is expected to sit on the bench again, as he did against City. Fourth-placed Chiefs and SuperSport, in fifth spot, are both desperate for points to keep up with the titlechasing pack.
