Stings maintain solid start to netball league

Coach Lucas attributes unbeaten run to good communication

- By Sihle Ndebele

Southern Stings coach Annelie Lucas has credited good communication among her players as the Western Cape outfit continues to dominate in the opening stages of the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League.

The Stings maintained their unbeaten run after a convincing 60-23 win over the KwaZulu-Natal Kingdom Stars at the Durban’s University of Technology on Sunday.

In their opening match of the tournament a fortnight ago, the Cape side recorded a 46-39 victory over Golden Fireballs before they shocked defending champions Free State Crinums 44-35 last week.

After Stings’ Sunday win over the Kingdom, Lucas said: “We’re gaining momentum and I am very happy with the way things are going. Our combinations are working, and the players are communicating very well.’’

Lucas’ charges finished third last year. Going into this year’s tournament many believed that the Cape side would be reduced to a shadow of its former self after the exodus of key players that included captain Leanie Kleynhans-Cornelissen and Erin Burger.

Stings goalkeeper Phumza Maweni has been a standout performer in the last three matches for the Cape side.

Also on Sunday, Limpopo Baobabs beat Northern Cape 5420,

Weekend’s results:

Gauteng North Jaguars 81, Northern Cape Diamonds 19; Limpopo Baobabs 43, Kingdom Stars 43 and; North West Flames 38, Eastern Cape Aloes 33.
