Two men bust for jobs scam

Desperate youth left high and dry

What was supposed to be a prospective job interview for desperate job seekers turned into a nightmare yesterday when two “recruitment agency” officials were bust for fraud in Morningside, Johannesburg.

Sandton police arrested two men aged between 25 and 35 years for allegedly swindling several unsuspecting job seekers of their money with promises for job placements.

The pair was nabbed after a mother of a job seeker reported the matter to police yesterday.

The agency had advertised several job placements online, including acting, modelling, truck driving and banking learnerships.

Job seeker Thendo Ramabulana, 24, said he applied last week. Ramabulana from Thohoyandou in Limpopo received an e-mail correspondence for a job interview that was due to take place yesterday.

“I had to take my last money to come to Gauteng to do the interview since I have been looking for a job for months now,” said Ramabulana yesterday.

He said he had paid R165, which he was told was for “screening and training”.

Another victim, Xoli Zulu, 27, from Alexandra, said she also applied online and paid a similar amount for her portfolio record in modelling. “I was told that I will get an 18 -month modelling contract that will see me making between R2 600andR3 600pershoot.”

Dineo Rabohlale, 22, travelled from Polokwane to attend the bogus job interview.

Constable David Mothapo confirmed two men were arrested for the alleged scam.
