Experienced Moeneeb to steady ship

Two-time league winner ‘crucial’ to Wits’ aspirations

At this crucial time of the season, Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt is choosing to go with the experience of a former league title winner to help inspire the Clever Boys to the biggest prize in South African football.

Moeneeb Josephs, a twotime league winner with his former club Orlando Pirates, has taken over the number one jersey from Darren Keet, who has 20 starts in the league.

Josephs has kept two clean sheets in three matches, including Wits’ crucial 1-0 victory over champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Monday night.

“That’s why you get old, to deal with these things. Popeye [Keet] did a wonderful job to put us in the position we are in right now. But the coach made a decision and I get to play now.

“It’s great that I can get to help the team, but it means nothing if we don’t win anything. So at the end of the season you can ask me that question again,” said Josephs, who stressed the importance of keeping their feet on the ground in the final five matches of the season.

“We just have to remain calm. As long as we pick up the points that we need, then we stand a good chance. It’s all in our hands. We are not depending on anybody.”

Against Sundowns on Monday, Wits took the lead three minutes before half time, thanks to a thumping header by Ben Motshwari. They held on doggedly for the win.

They’ll need more of the same when they take on Orlando Pirates at Bidvest Stadium tomorrow (7.30pm).

“Thursday is an even bigger game. Pirates are on a good run, so it’s going to be a humdinger, but these are the kind of games we want to be playing,” said Josephs.
