Why Hunt’s not getting carried away after beating Downs

‘We’ve let ourselves slip in the last couple of weeks’

There are a couple of reasons Gavin Hunt did not celebrate the victory over Mamelodi Sundowns as wildly as his technical staff and players did on Monday.

The Bidvest Wits coach knows that the 1-0 victory, secured by a Ben Motshwari header, would mean absolutely nothing if Wits do not go on to win the Absa Premiership title. The three-time league winning coach also understands that he cannot get carried away when there’s still five matches to play in the season.

Wits are top of the table with a one-point lead over secondplaced Sundowns, but they could have had a bigger lead had they not dropped points against fellow title rivals Cape Town City and SuperSport United, whose hopes of being crowned champions have faded in recent weeks.

“We’ve let ourselves slip in the last couple of weeks and we know that. We should have been gone,” said Hunt.

“We’ll have to battle right till the death and see where we end up. It’s going to be tight, but we’ve got to keep believing. We have the hardest run-in, without a doubt. I can’t see any of them [Sundowns and Cape Town City] losing a game.”

The win was spoiled by the red card Daine Klate picked up. Hunt would have loved to have Klate for the clash against Orlando Pirates at Bidvest Stadium tomorrow.

“You need a guy like Daine in a game against Pirates, but we have [Gabadinho] Mhango [and] Phakamani [Mahlambi], so let’s see,” said Hunt.
