Lim345 to be renamed after Collins Chabane
Council to adopt late public service minister’s name
The new Lim345 municipality which incorporates Malamulele and some areas of Vuwani in Limpopo looks set to be renamed after late minister of public service and administration Collins Chabane, if a proposal by community structures is to go by.
Congress of Traditional Leaders of SA (Contralesa) in the Malamulele area has been at the forefront of pushing for the naming of the municipality after Chabane.
The proposal enjoys the support of various structures in the area.
Lim345 municipality came into effect after last year’s municipal elections and the redrawing of boundaries by the Municipal Demarcation Board that ensured Malamulele had its own municipality.
Contralesa Malamulele branch secretary Hosi Bohani Shigamani said community meetings held recently had endorsed that the name of the municipality be changed to Collins Chabane, who died in a car crash two years ago.
“As Contralesa branch we are happy that there were no objections to the proposal to have the name Lim345 municipality changed,” said Shigamani.
“We thought it would be fitting to name the municipality after Chabane as a way of honouring him for the role he played in the liberation of the country.”
The Chabane family spokesman Percy Chabane confirmed that the family, including the late minister’s wife Mavis, were consulted. “We have accepted the proposed name change to that of our brother on the basis that the community wanted it. We agreed to it because the name was not imposed on them,” he said.
Councillor Elvis Lebea, speaker of the Lim345 municipality, confirmed that structures had agreed “unanimously” to rename the municipality.
