Bidvest Wits will be at risk of losing Phakamani Mahlambi and Reeve Frosler for the rest of the season if they do not release the youngsters for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup.

Safa have put their foot down on Wits and SuperSport United for refusing to release their players for the tournament in South Korea. SuperSport are refusing to let go of midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

In a statement sent out by Safa yesterday, they made it clear that they can suspend the players in question and also give heavy fines to clubs who do not cooperate.

Amajita leave for South Korea today to finalise their preparations for the World Cup which kicks off on May 20.

“We shall convene an urgent tribunal, seek the immediate suspension of the players in question and seek the severest penalty against all the clubs that refuse to release players for the national team.

“As a result, Safa will convene a DC with the concerned clubs on Wednesday, 10 May 2017 (today) at Safa House in a bid to urgently address the matter. We submit that Bidvest Wits, SuperSport United and other clubs participating in Safa’s competitions, leagues and other structures, have an obligation to make their players available for national duty as and when needed.”

In their letter to Safa, Wits say they are not obliged to release the above-mentioned players because the tournament falls outside the Fifa calender.

“I’m busy right now and I can’t talk,” said Wits chief executive Jose Ferreira.
