United dent City’s title hopes with drubbing

Tinkler’s men let lead slip as they lose by four

- By Tiyani wa ka Mabasa at Lucas Moripe Stadium

Title-chasing Cape Town City didn’t do themselves any favours by losing 4-2 to SuperSport United here last night.

The visitors looked on course for a win early on when Lehlohonolo Majoro opened the scoring in the seventh minute.

If Bidvest Wits beat Free State Stars tonight, it’s all over for Eric Tinkler’s men as they would be officially out of the race to win the Absa Premiership.

SuperSport had actually started well despite conceding and were rewarded after half an hour when Thuso Phala played Thabo Mnyamane through on goal. City goalkeeper ShuAib Walters failed to win the ball and Mnyamane was left with the easiest of finishes to level matters.

Matsatsantsa dictated terms in the second half and took the lead just five minutes into the second stanza.

It all started with Walters failing to hold on to the ball after a free kick by Mnyamane and Clayton Daniels took advantage by slotting home to give them the lead.

City fought their way back into the contest via a penalty after the hour mark. SuperSport defender Michael Boxall brought down Majoro and the referee pointed to the spot.

Captain Lebohang Manyama stepped up to score his 13th league goal of the season. He’s now the league’s leading scorer.

SuperSport had the last say with 15 minutes remaining when striker Jeremy Brockie finished off a cross.

This was after City forward Sibusiso Masina had tried to dribble the whole SuperSport defence and was dispossessed, which resulted in SuperSport launching their own attack that ended with Brockie finding the back of the net.

There was even more time for a fourth for Stuart Baxter’s men. Young Teboho Mokoena was played through one-onone with Walters, but he opted instead to pass to Phala who was in a much better position for an easy finish.
