Way to go, Clever Boys

-

An exhilarating race for the top domestic football league title came to an exciting conclusion with Bidvest Wits deservedly clinching it ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night.

We take this moment to congratulate Wits and their entire staff, led by Gavin Hunt, who has now claimed four Premier Soccer League (PSL) titles, following earlier success at SuperSport United.

In winning the league title, Wits became the 15th different side to clinch this crown since football was professionalised in this country back in 1978.

It’s also a historic moment for Wits as they are the oldest team in the country, having been founded in 1921, and are first-time winners.

Their success should serve as a lesson to all PSL teams that, with a bit of patience, trophies can be won.

Wits first hired Hunt in 2013 and have been supporting him since, making sure he strengthened the team when required, and not exerting any pressure on him when results didn’t go their way.

In three prior seasons before this one, they finished third, third and second – an indication of an upward trajectory that inevitably led to title glory.

The fact that Hunt is a local coach makes Wits’ triumph even sweeter.

Too many of our teams do not believe in local talent, even when the reality is that titles are won mainly by South African coaches.

Well done, Wits. You deserve it!
