Manyama looks to secure golden boot
It’s Manyama v Ndoro for race to win topscorer award this season
Cape Town City forward Lebogang Manyama will be happy to finish as Absa Premiership top scorer but he says he wouldn’t complain if he misses out.
The City captain has already fulfilled his objective for the season. Manyama, 26, guided City to the Telkom Knockout victory and the team, currently in third place, is already guaranteed a CAF Confederation Cup spot.
They will play in the Champions League if they finish second.
“More importantly, we have a chance to finish second because [Mamelodi] Sundowns also have a tough match against Highlands Park. It’s an opportunity for us to get three points and hopefully I can get a goal or two in the last match,” Manyama told Sowetan yesterday, ahead of his side’s tie against Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
This is the same venue of City’s Telkom Knockout triumph in December and Manyama is relishing the opportunity to make it another memorable day in Limpopo.
Manyama is currently on 13 league goals and has one more in cup competitions.
His only threat to the golden boot is Orlando Pirates striker Tendai Ndoro who has 12 league goals and one in the cup.
“It would be amazing for me. Everybody wants to be the top scorer, especially as an attacking player. Even if it goes to someone else, I will still be proud of myself,” he said.
Manyama attributes reaching double figures for the first time in his career to playing more in the box.
Ndoro, though, has faded after a blistering start to the season. As a result, Bucs coach Kjell Jonevret has at times preferred Thamsanqa Gabuza in the attack.
Ndoro has only scored once this year, a penalty against Free State Stars on April 1.
The Zimbabwean marksman will be hoping to start against Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium. After all, Ndoro scored a hat-trick against Arrows at Orlando Stadium in August.
