DJ Naves and Sphe left Metro FM because the station could not secure them a daily show.

The duo, which is made up of Sphe Ngwenya and Lebogang Naves, resigned from the show after seven years.

Speaking to Sowetan shortly after being announced as the new host of a drive time show, The Kings Drive, on Gagasi FM, Ngwenya said they parted ways with the station “amicably”.

“We had talks with the guys [at Metro FM] and asked them if we could have a daily slot. They made it clear that it won’t happen any time soon, so we decided to part ways with Metro,” he said.

Ngwenya said they will forever be indebted to Metro FM for giving them a chance to host the weekend show.

“Seven years is a long time, the station was nurturing. I will always be thankful to them for giving us a chance when we were new and they gave us [our] first show,” he said.

According to a statement released by Gagasi FM, the pair will host an afternoon drive show between 3pm and 6pm from Monday to Friday, alongside Nomfundo Clarissa, who will be doing traffic news, starting from June 1.

Ngwenya said they will be in between provinces to accommodate their show, which is Durban based.

Gagasi FM programmes manager Mimi Kesaris said the station got Sphe and Naves on board because their “brand needed to move forward”.

“With Sphe and Naves, there is a natural fit in terms of their individual brands and the Gagasi FM brand. We believe our audience will also relate to them, not just in terms of their show on-air, but other engaging platforms as well such as digital and events that we do,” Kesaris said in a statement.
