Mampintsha angry over Babes Sama flop

Singer and her beau slam awards as she comes out empty handed, again

- By Patience Bambalele

Babes Wodumo had declared war going to the South African Music Awards, promising not to enter the awards again if she did not at least win one of the four categories she was nominated in.

Well, she came back empty handed from Sun City, and her beau and record label owner Mampitsha Maphumulo fired the first salvo on her behalf.

“Voetsek! ... ngalama awards [go away with your awards]. Nithenga ama awards ... [you are buying awards],” Maphumulo exploded with anger on stage at the end of a performance with Babes.

Babes and the member of kwaito group Big Nuz as well as owner of West Ink Records were given the last performance of the night at Sun City’s Super Bowl in Rustenburg, North West, on Saturday.

Bongekile Simelane, aka Babes Wodumo, also won nothing for the three nomination at Metro FM Awards.

Maphumulo took the fight to social media and posted a video explaining his anger.

He accused some winners of paying bribes.

“You are greedy, f*** ... all the South African awards, you don’t want to see West Ink and Babes succeeding. How can a song that trended the whole year, even a child knows about it, and when you sit down as judges you don’t see it as a winner? You people are greedy.”

Wodumo said in her video: “I’m sure you all saw that I did not win again, like it happened to the Metro FM awards. The awards thing is not working in South Africa. There is no way a song can dominate the airwaves until I even got nominated in the BET awards, and I don’t get even one award. Both me and Mampintsha, we will continue performing despite all this.”

The biggest surprises on the night should be 19-year-old Refentse, who won the best selling album of the year gong.

Refentse’s debut album, My Hart Bly in ’n Taal, enjoyed phenomenal success in the Afrikaans music market. Other selected winners: Amanda Black – best newcomer

● of the year, best female artist of the year, best album of the year and best R&B/ soul/ reggae album.

She said: “I cannot say that I expected to win as much … Maybe because I am just a new kid on the block. The awards I have won this year mean that I have worked hard and someone has noticed that.”

Kwesta – best male artist of the ● year, best rap album and highest airplay. He also won best collaboration for his hit Ngud, featuring Cassper Nyovest.

Black Motion – best duo/ group of the year and best dance album. ”

Khuzani Mpungose – best maskandi album. “I am happy to win my first Sama award. When they called my name I could not believe that it was me,” he said.

Vusi Nova – best Afro-pop album. He dedicated it to his late mother for supporting him to pursue his dream as a musician.

Rebecca Malope, Don Laka and Babsy Mlangeni were honoured with lifetime achievement awards.
