Nothing to celebrate on Africa Day
I hear much laughter about Africa Day celebrations, which are a waste of time, energy and money.
What do we celebrate? Hunger and the perpetual impoverishment of the African people.
In South Africa, more than eight million active youths and adults with education are unemployed.
Africa has become a war zone, with many people murdered.
So many people have lost relatives to poor health services.
Our roads in rural Africa are in an impossible state.
Then there is the killing of women and girls. This kills our joy and does not warrant any celebration.
Many rands are channelled for the personal enrichment of those in authority, their friends and relatives.
We have not had leadership in Africa since 1960. People fight to be rich and then do nothing for the majority who are impoverished and enslaved by poverty, unemployment and inequality.
There are two types of people in Africa, those who are affluent and those who are nothing.
Government officials have been privileged to earn salaries of more than R800 000 while the majority earn about R4 000 a month or even less, and struggle to make ends meet.
How does one expect to see people in Africa celebrating when our leaders are killing us with corruption, mismanagement of funds and poor service delivery?
So to celebrate Africa Day is a mockery because there is no peace on the continent. Madala Alfred Mabunda, Giyani, Limpopo
