Even a win can’ t mask Chiefs’ pain

Steve: We dropped too many points

- By Tshepang Mailwane

Steve Komphela was frank in his assessment of the just completed Absa Premiership season, admitting Kaizer Chiefs were just not good enough.

Chiefs supporters watched in envy as Bidvest Wits players lifted the league title at their home ground FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Chiefs won the game 1-0, thanks to a stoppage time goal from Gustavo Paez, to finish the season in fourth place – one above last season’s fifth place finish.

Despite two campaigns without a trophy, Komphela has the backing of Amakhosi chairman Kaizer Motaung so, as he heads into his third season, the coach will be hoping it’s third time lucky.

To get their hands on the title Wits lifted, Komphela is aware that they need to learn from this past season’s lessons, which include conceding late goals, dropping too many points at home and drawing games they should not have drawn.

“I thought we have ourselves to blame. The reflection should not come across as excuses. There’s about eight games where we gave away 18 points.

“Take those 18 points, put with the 50, and then it’s a totally different ball game,” said Komphela.

Chiefs’ signings this season were poor. Aside from Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Joseph Molangoane and Paez, none of their other signings made a mark.

“There’re areas where I felt we were a bit thin and there are certain things that need to be rectified, but that can be done after the audit of the season.

“Coaches have to be careful you don’t start talking about things before they are done, but we need to tighten up some screws before we can come through,” said Komphela.
