Serial rapist gets 90 years

Motsamai’s brutality recalled

- By Pertunia Mafokwane

One of the victims of notorious East Rand serial rapist Alfred Eugene Motsamai has been left so traumatised by her rape ordeal that she carries around a weapon to defend herself from being attacked by men.

The woman was among six victims raped by Motsamai, 35, from Welkom in the Free State between 2011 and 2013 in Katlehong and surrounding areas.

Motsamai lured some of the women to secluded areas after he offered them a lift in his car.

Motsamai, who worked as a gym instructor, was sentenced to an effective 90 years imprisonment in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday for the string of rapes.

In some cases, Motsamai forced women to perform oral sex on him.

The woman wrote down her feelings after the rape ordeal and said she has lost trust in men.

“I feel like I have to protect myself from each and every man.

“I carry sharp objects just so I could protect myself. I no longer enjoy being intimate with any guy I get involved with because I feel like they are raping me,” she said.

“I feel that should be like the same incident happening again, I am going to do everything to protect myself. It’s going to be my life or (the perpetrator’s life),” she wrote.

The woman said she forgave Motsamai.

“I realise that I have to forgive myself because none of this was my fault and I forgive the accused, even though he does not think he is guilty,” she said.

Motsamai faced 10 counts of rape and four of kidnapping.

One of the women was raped at a party that Motsamai’s wife had attended. His wife walked in as he raped the woman.

In 2008, Motsamai was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping his ex-girlfriend and forcing her to perform oral sex.

He was then released on bail pending an appeal on conviction and sentence. The appeal was dismissed in 2010 but he could not be traced until he was re-arrested last year.

Another woman said she had also lost interest in men ever since Motsamai raped her.

“I was pregnant when he raped me. He held my hair tight and pulled it. He forced me to perform oral sex. The thought of me doing that made me sick throughout my pregnancy.

“I felt like committing suicide. I felt like I was stripped of my dignity. I no longer have feelings for men. Maybe I might feel something in future I do not know,” she said.

The woman said her ordeal made her realise that she was a strong woman.

“I am grateful that he did not kill me and I can take care of my children,” she said.

Motsamai tried to lodge an appeal against his latest conviction and sentence but failed.
