‘I feel I did more than enough’
Cavin Johnson is still trying to digest how he was let go by Platinum Stars this week after his contract came to an end.
For someone who reached the CAF Confederation Cup group stages and missed out on the top eight on the final day of the season while giving young players an opportunity, Johnson should have been given a contract extension.
But to his surprise, Dikwena opted against it.
“As a coach I feel I did more than enough, looking at where we where, how we did it and when we did it.
“I am trying to digest what has happened to me over the last five days and I’m waiting to see what my next option is,” said Johnson yesterday.
Johnson’s departure was announced on Monday around midday, a day after they were beaten 3-0 by Tunisian outfit CS Sfaxien in the Confederation Cup group stage.
Stars are without a victory after three matches, but they did quite well to get to where they are, especially because they’ve used the competition to develop their young players.
Johnson has not been afraid to give players such as Gift Links (18), Katlego Khunou (19), Siphamandla Mlilo (22), Steven Hoffman (23) and Thuto Mphahlele (22) a chance to gain valuable experience.
“It’s always been the club’s perspective to promote youngsters from the North West to make North West people to come support the team.
“I can’t put my finger on it [why the contract was not renewed],” said Johnson.
“I think the club did more than enough in the [transfer] market. [But] I don’t think the market was there to work with.
“We were happy with the squad and I wanted to give those players who finished third in the league last season a chance to go play on the continent. I feel the youngsters did well.”
Dikwena are said to be eyeing former Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa.
